Terms

Transport and distributionContainer demurrage

A charge for retaining a container inside the terminal beyond free time. It differs from storage and off-terminal detention; carrier terms govern application.

See also: Storage charge (ardiye), Container detention, Free time

Reference: Maersk

Transport and distributionContainer detention

A charge for keeping a carrier's container outside the terminal beyond free time. Some tariffs combine detention and demurrage periods and charges.

See also: Container demurrage, Free time, Storage charge (ardiye)

Reference: Maersk

Transport and distributionETA (Estimated time of arrival)

The expected arrival time at a specified point. It is an updateable estimate, not actual arrival or a firm delivery commitment.

See also: ETD (Estimated time of departure), Dock scheduling, Lead time

Reference: DHL

Transport and distributionETD (Estimated time of departure)

The expected departure time from origin. Here ETD means estimated time of departure; a report should spell out its intended expansion.

See also: ETA (Estimated time of arrival), Cut-off time, Loading

Reference: Maersk

Transport and distributionFCL (Full container load)

A transport arrangement allocating a container to a shipment. The container need not be filled to its maximum volume or weight.

See also: LCL (Less than container load), Full truckload (FTL), Cube utilisation

Reference: Maersk

Transport and distributionFree time

The agreed period before specified demurrage, detention or storage charges apply. The contract or tariff identifies the covered charge and when time starts.

See also: Container demurrage, Container detention, Storage charge (ardiye)

Reference: Maersk

Transport and distributionFreight forwarder

A business organising freight movement from origin to destination by coordinating carriers, connections, documents and related services. It does not necessarily perform carriage with its own vehicles.

See also: 3PL (Third-party logistics), Multimodal transport, Freight charge

Reference: FIATA

Transport and distributionFull truckload (FTL)

Transport with vehicle capacity dedicated to a load. The vehicle does not have to be physically full; dedicated capacity and actual utilisation are different concepts.

See also: Part-load transport (LTL / PTL), Cube utilisation, Freight charge

Reference: DHL

Transport and distributionGroupage

Combining smaller consignments from different shippers for compatible transport routes. It can involve collection, consolidation, trunk movement and distribution at destination.

See also: Part-load transport (LTL / PTL), Consolidation, Deconsolidation

Reference: DHL

Transport and distributionIntermodal transport

Using at least two transport modes while goods remain in the same loading unit, such as transferring a container from truck to train without unloading its contents.

See also: Multimodal transport, Transshipment / transfer, Handling unit

Reference: DHL Freight

Transport and distributionLCL (Less than container load)

Sharing a container among multiple consignments. Origin consolidation and destination separation mean that sailing time alone does not represent the full delivery lead time.

See also: FCL (Full container load), Consolidation, Deconsolidation

Reference: Maersk

Transport and distributionLinehaul

The main transport leg between depots, terminals or hubs. Initial collection from shippers and final delivery to recipients can be planned separately from this trunk movement.

See also: Last mile, Transshipment / transfer, Hub-and-spoke

Reference: DHL Freight

Transport and distributionMultimodal transport

Using at least two modes, such as road, sea, rail or air, in one transport chain. Unlike intermodal transport, the operational definition does not require retaining the same loading unit; contractual arrangements are specified separately.

See also: Intermodal transport, Freight forwarder

Reference: DHL Freight

Transport and distributionPart-load transport (LTL / PTL)

Transport in which freight needing less than a full vehicle shares capacity with other shipments. LTL and PTL services can differ in transfer frequency, routing and transit time.

See also: Full truckload (FTL), Groupage, Consolidation

Reference: DHL

Transport and distributionProof of delivery (POD / ePOD)

A record evidencing delivery, potentially including signature, time, recipient or photo. Damage and shortage remarks are recorded separately.

See also: Taking receipt of goods, OTIF (on time in full), OSD (overage / shortage / damage)

Transport and distributionStorage charge (ardiye)

A charge for keeping cargo or containers at a warehouse, port or terminal. The facility's applicable tariff determines the period and amount.

See also: Container demurrage, Container detention, Free time

Reference: Maersk

Transport and distributionTransshipment / transfer

Moving freight from one vehicle, service or connection to another during its journey. A hub transfer may involve waiting and sorting; not every transfer is cross-docking without storage.

See also: Cross-docking, Hub-and-spoke, Linehaul
