Guide · Warehouse management system
What Is a Warehouse Management System (WMS)?
A warehouse management system (WMS) is software that manages not just how much stock a warehouse holds, but where it is, which task moves it and who it is reserved for. In Turkey the same need is searched as “warehouse management system”, “warehouse management software”, “warehouse management program” or simply “WMS”.
Definition
A warehouse management system turns goods receipt, putaway, replenishment, order picking, packing, shipping, counting and returns into verified records, using barcodes, QR codes or RFID. The goals are inventory accuracy, shorter walking distances, fewer wrong shipments and traceability.
WMSTurkiye is not a software vendor. This page is not a sales page; it is meant to help decision-makers clarify their needs and compare options in the WMS directory for Turkey. For a short summary in “software / program” terms, see what is warehouse management software.
Which processes does a WMS manage?
- Goods receipt: ASN, partial receipt, quality hold — goods receipt guide.
- Putaway and replenishment: directed putaway, replenishment — putaway guide.
- Stock model: pallets, cases, locations — stock hierarchy.
- Picking: order, wave, zone — picking methods.
- Packing and shipping: pack stations, staging and loading.
- Counting and traceability: cycle counts, lot / expiry / serial.
WMS vs ERP
The inventory screen in an ERP is usually an accounting balance. A WMS is the reality on the floor: locations, handling units, quality status, reservations and the task queue. A broken integration widens the “in the system but not on the shelf” gap.
For SAP scenarios, see movement mapping: WMS–SAP movement mapping.
Who needs a warehouse management system?
- Wrong items, lost pallets or high return costs have started.
- You have a rack and location structure; spreadsheets or ERP stock lines are no longer enough.
- Lot, expiry or serial discipline is mandatory, as in pharma, food or chemicals.
- 3PL, e-commerce or multi-channel shipping puts pressure on speed.
- Several warehouses or several clients' stock (3PL) are managed at the same time.
Scope changes with the warehouse type: warehouse types and WMS needs.
Types of warehouse management system
- Standalone WMS: installed separately from the ERP; integration is planned as a project.
- ERP-embedded or ERP-linked WMS: aims for one version of stock truth in ecosystems such as Logo, SAP or Dynamics.
- Cloud (SaaS) WMS: fast to deploy; customisation and data residency need a separate review.
- Automation-linked WMS / WCS: works together with conveyors, shuttles and AS/RS.
How to choose a WMS in Turkey
In Turkey the search intent is usually “which program should I buy?”. The right order is: processes and master data → operation type → ERP and device fit → short-list → controlled pilot.
- Is there a proven integration with your current ERP?
- Are handheld terminals, label printers and existing floor devices compatible?
- Which modules do you really need — picking, lot control, 3PL billing?
- Does the proposal include training, process ownership and a go-live plan?

Frequently asked questions
What is a warehouse management system?
Software that manages stock locations and tasks inside the warehouse, from goods receipt to shipping (WMS).
Is a WMS different from warehouse management software?
No; they are different search terms for the same need. “System”, “software” and “program” usually mean a WMS. The difference is not in the product name but in how deeply the process manages locations and tasks.
Does a small warehouse need a WMS?
Not necessarily: with one door, few SKUs and a spreadsheet that works, it may not. Once locations, lots and the cost of errors grow, a WMS usually costs less than the errors it prevents.
