WMS Picking Methods: Single Order, Batch, Cluster, Pre-Picking and Fast-Pack
The right picking method determines not just speed but also sortation needs, error risk and the packing flow. The same warehouse can use several methods during the day, depending on the order profile.
Single, batch and cluster picking
- Single order picking: one worker picks one order from start to finish. Simple and traceable; suits low volume or very large orders.
- Batch picking: orders that share items are picked in one tour and sorted afterwards. Less walking, but it needs accurate sortation.
- Cluster picking: each slot on the cart is assigned to an order; when an item is scanned, it goes into the right slot. It gives batch picking's walking advantage without sorting afterwards.
- Zone picking: each worker picks within their own zone; orders are passed between zones or the parts are consolidated.
What are pre-picking, fast-pack and pick-and-pack?
Pre-picking prepares items in a forward area for forecast demand before firm orders are released. It can ease campaigns and peak hours; if the forecast is wrong, it creates put-back work and inventory accuracy risk.
Fast-pack is not a universal standard; it is usually a company- or software-specific name for a flow that speeds up packing. Item, order and packaging verification are expected to be completed in few steps; the scope should be defined explicitly in the project.
Pick and pack combines picking and packing in the same task or station. It can reduce handling for single-item or low-line e-commerce orders; where quality control requirements are high, separate packing may be safer.
How to choose a picking method

Measure lines per order, SKU overlap, item size, SLA, aisle distances, devices and labour capacity with real data. Allocation and picking priority decide the order in which the method runs.
A short example
An e-commerce warehouse batch-picks the same SKU for 40 single-item orders; if a slot is assigned to each order, it turns this into a cluster flow. Two ten-line corporate orders can be picked individually. The WMS should choose the task type from the order profile and record every scan with its order–item–case link.
