WMS for 3PL and contract logistics warehouses

In a 3PL warehouse the real product is the service: each client has its own rules, reports and invoice. A WMS that supports multi-client operation and activity-based billing as standard lets you onboard a new client in days rather than weeks.

Capabilities to look for in a WMS

CapabilityWhy it mattersHow to test it in a demo
Multi-client stock and rule separationOne client's rules do not affect another's; stock never mixes.Have different picking rules defined for two clients.
Activity-based billingServices such as pallet-days, lines, cartons and labelling are measured automatically.Produce a sample invoice breakdown from a month of transactions.
Client portal and reportsClients see their own stock and orders, reducing support load.Log in as a client user and confirm only its own data is visible.
Fast client onboardingTemplate-based setup and bulk master-data upload for new clients.Watch how many steps it takes to set up a new client from scratch.
Value-added services (kitting, labelling)VAS work is tracked as tasks and flows into billing.Run a kitting job end to end.

Ask the vendor

  1. Which references manage how many clients in one warehouse? In which sectors?
  2. Is billing standard or an add-on? How is it transferred to our accounting system?
  3. If a client wants to connect its own ERP, who owns the integration?
  4. Does the client portal require additional licences?

Frequently asked questions

What is non-negotiable for a WMS in a 3PL warehouse?

Stock and permission separation per client. One client's user must not see another's stock or pull their reports. On top of that come per-client service tariffs and period-end billing statements; without them a 3PL operation falls back to spreadsheets.

Should the client see their own stock?

Yes, and it has become a contract requirement. Ask whether there is a client portal with sub-users and role permissions; without one, every query lands on your operations team.

Can service billing come out of the WMS?

Storage, movements and value-added services need to be measured as a billing basis. Ask the vendor whether tariffs can be defined per client and whether a period-end statement is available.
