WMS for e-commerce warehouses: what to look for

An e-commerce warehouse has to ship large numbers of one- or few-line orders accurately within the day. Success depends as much on seamless marketplace, carrier and returns flows as on picking and packing speed.

Capabilities to look for in a WMS

CapabilityWhy it mattersHow to test it in a demo
Batch and wave picking with sortingCuts walking distance compared with single-order picking.Have a wave built from a real day's orders and look at the pick path.
Pack-station verificationWrong or missing items are caught before they reach the customer.Scan a wrong item and see whether the system stops you.
Carrier integration and labelsLabels and tracking numbers are not keyed in by hand, speeding up dispatch.Print a live label with the carriers you use.
Marketplace and e-commerce platform integrationOrders and stock flow through one place, reducing oversell risk.Ask and show how quickly a stock change reaches the marketplace.
Returns receipt and gradingSellable items return to stock quickly; damaged items are separated.Receive a return and grade it sellable / damaged.
Cut-off times and order priorityOrders promised for same-day shipping are picked first.Change the priority rule with orders that have different cut-off times.

Ask the vendor

  1. Which marketplaces, e-commerce platforms and carriers do you integrate with out of the box? Who maintains them?
  2. Does your price depend on order volume? What happens if a campaign month exceeds it?
  3. Which customers process peak-day hourly volumes like ours? Can we talk to them?
  4. What are the steps to put a returned item back on sale?
